He never said anything to his siblings about it, although he suspected they must have figured it out at some point. After all, none of them were stupid, and sooner or later even the most self-involved person must have seen how tense he became as winter stretched on.

But as he and Caspian walked along one of the great tree-lined lanes he could feel his lover's attention on him instead of on the trees he had just pointed out.

"Edmund, what is it? You seem so troubled," Caspian asked softly, stopping him with a gentle hand on his shoulder. "I tell you the trees look like they're coated in spun glass and you look... afraid."

"I am," he answered softly. "I can't help it -- it's foolish, I know. But... it's winter, and..." he looked at Caspian, seeing nothing but love and concern in his lover's dark eyes. "I'm always afraid that spring won't come."

"Oh," Caspian said softly, almost more a breath than speech. "I never thought about that. It must be-- I would promise you that spring will always come and summer after that, but..."

"It's not in our power to promise that, Cas -- if she ever came back, she could undo it all again," Edmund said softly, his eyes shadowed and fear-filled. "I worry every year, until the first spring flowers break through the snow."

Caspian wrapped his arms around his lover, then, and kissed him gently. "I can't promise you the seasons will always flow the way they should, Love, but I can promise you that I would be by your side in a fight against her. You don't need to ever worry about facing her alone again." Edmund smiled shyly and hugged Caspian tightly, burying his face in his lover's fur-lined cloak. "There, I can feel you relaxing already," Caspian murmured.

"I think I've been afraid for so long, I forgot how beautiful winter can be," Edmund answered him softly. "Will you show me?"

"Always, my Edmund, always."
