He's sure that the Calormene who show them around their capital city are steering them away from the worst of the dirt and poverty, trying to give the impression of great wealth and happy citizens everywhere. But Edmund knows in a city this size, in a culture that includes slavery, there must be slums -- and worse. On the surface it looks like a fantasy straight out of the Arabian Nights, but scratch that surface and there's no fantasy underneath...

As they're shown past marketplace stalls full of colourful silks, fragrant oils, and startlingly vivid mounds of loose spices he can't help thinking about how many people must be cowering away in their homes under fear of punishment for ruining the perfect illusion. How many of those people can't even afford a loaf of the crusty bread and pray, every day, for enough scraps to feed their family?

Susan's eyes go wide and she tugs them over to one of the stalls, taken in by the rich silks and oils, but all Edmund can wonder is whether the people would even recognize freedom if the Narnians were to offer it. He sighs and joins his sister, forcing down the disgust he feels as the sellers offer their goods.
