The Pevensies weren't rich, but occasionally they had wine with dinner -- a very Continental thing to do, Susan said. Even the children would get their little glasses of wine, although Lucy's was barely more than coloured water, and Edmund's only slightly less water than hers. But Edmund had never developed a taste for it -- the dry red that their mother preferred was too bitter and made his tongue feel dry and fuzzy.

When he drank wine in Narnia for the first time, he was amazed by the difference -- this wine was full and refreshing, not bitter in any way. He could still taste the things he tasted in his parents' wine, but there was a sweet berry flavour, something like dark cherries and plums, and even a little hint of chocolate and nutmeg in the aftertaste. He liked it so much more than the wine he had back at home, and sharing it with good friends was even better.

Sharing it with his lover was the best, though, and he smiled as Caspian poured their glasses and settled on the bed next to him. Good wine, a comfortable fire, and his lover -- a perfect combination.
