As they travelled across the water, Edmund thought again of Caspian's tearful confession, that Aslan had told him he must stay and they must go. Once again, he felt that Caspian had been trying to tell him something without saying it, and he thought his heart might break if they truly felt the same way about each other.

And once they said their farewells to Reepicheep, Edmund hastily brushed away tears before he took Lucy's hand and Eustace and the both of them began wading. Once they reached the grass, he was even less sure of what he wanted to do, but as the Lamb turned into Aslan and prepared to send them home, he frowned. And then Aslan told Lucy and him they would never return to Narnia, and he felt his heart start to crack and shatter. He couldn't go back without knowing...

"No." It was only a whisper, but it may as well have been a shout. "I'm not going back yet."

"Ed!" Lucy gasped, as Eustace gave him a surprised look.

Aslan merely turned his golden gaze towards him, meeting his dark eyes.

"I can't leave. Not yet. I-- you two can go back, and when I do finally go back, it'll be like hardly any time has passed, anyway. It's just... you'll be happy back home, and I-- I'm not so sure I can be," he explained hesitantly. His next words were barely above a whisper, "I think I might have found someone. Someone I care about a great deal. I can't just leave without knowing if my feelings are returned. If I'm wrong, I'll be right back, before you know it."

"I think you'll be very happy, Ed," Lucy said softly, and he could see in her eyes that she knew. Eustace merely nodded, and he could imagine his cousin saying 'That explains an awful lot, Edmund,' but he found he didn't mind.

And then Aslan softly commanded, "I have told you it is time for you to return, Edmund. Tell me why you believe differently."

He took a deep breath, well aware that the question was, in some ways, a test. "I love someone. Isn't that enough?"

"You cannot find someone to love in your own world?" Aslan pressed, and he knew the Lion already knew the answer.

"Not and live happily."

"And what will you do if your feelings are not returned?"

"Go home with a broken heart, of course," Edmund answered softly.

"Return to the Dawn Treader, Edmund," Aslan rumbled. "Love is the best reason of all."

He whispered softly, "Thank you, Aslan!" then spent a brief time hugging both Eustace and Lucy before he told them he would see them again, when the time was right. He turned back to see Aslan shining brightly, and then he ran back across the shallows, his heart singing with happiness. He climbed back into the boat and began rowing back towards the silhouette of the Dawn Treader, not surprised at all when a breeze picked up behind him, pushing him closer and closer to the ship.

Soon, he was in sight of the lookout, and he could see the man alert others. They dropped the ropes down and he climbed up, not paying any more attention to them pulling the boat up behind him as Caspian rushed across the deck towards him. Then they were in each other's arms, and he buried his face against Caspian's neck, breathing in that scent that made his head spin. And Caspian was asking, "What are you doing back here?"

"I-- Aslan was sending us home and he said Lu and I couldn't return. I couldn't leave yet -- not without knowing..."

"You already know, Ed," Caspian whispered, continuing to hold him close.
